Coral: The Color of the Year

Every single year there is a color that is “in,” primarily that lasts from Winter all the way to the end of Fall of the next year until a new color is “in.” Candles, lipsticks, bralettes, bathing suits, NYFW street style… it’s everywhere and is so beautiful; to some it might remind them of their favorite scent or hot summer beach day. Coral is the official color of the year in 2019 and is seen everywhere you look. Coral is the color of carefree happiness and symbolizes our innate need for optimism and joyful thoughts. Color enhances and influences our life with different experiences and adventures. With a color so vibrant and filled with energy, coral produces a never ending stimulant of happiness. Crescent has been a favorite brand of ours since the beginning. Their clothing is soft, affordable, and made of great material. This Way Strappy Back Detail Top, only retails for $24! And, the mauve-y coral color so subtle and soft for this upcoming season. The criss cross detailing of the straps in the back makes for a flirty and sophisticated look. This is a great layering piece for cardigans but also great for warm climates! We suggest to wear this shirt alone without any jackets to show off the back detailing. Working that usual 9-5 could be a drag for many reasons. Waking up early, getting that 2pm crash, and being exhausted by the evening wears you out, but it shouldn’t take away the fun in plumping up your style in the workplace. Whether your boss is a stickler to obtaining a particular dress code or a free-for-all of a manager on allowing you to wear what you want, we can all agree that showing up to work in a fashionable outfit sets the mood in the workplace at a better volume for yourself. Here are some fun styles that scream chic and trendy, yet still are remarkably sophisticated and formal for that professional look.

1. Getting Around a Stickler of a Boss: Work Pants

Many people have jobs where they aren’t allowed to wear dressier outfits and must abide by a particular dress code in the office. It’s great to respect that, but how do you tip toe around expanding your wardrobe in a more voguish way? Definitely follow the dress code, however spice up those particular elements that the dress code requires. Which Color Tone Are You?

Everyone knows that you either have a cool or warm undertone. But finding out how could be tricky and figuring out which colors on the color wheel look best on you is equally as difficult. Some people are in between and have neutral undertones that require more attention to detail in their everyday clothing. This article will produce a better understanding on how to figure out which color tone or undertone you are in order to pair outfits together using the correct color blocking techniques.

First and foremost, if we take a look at the color wheel we see that the warm colors are reds, oranges, and yellows, while cool colors are greens, blues, and purples. Someone with a warm undertone would usually stand out in those bright reds, oranges, and yellows while someone with a cool undertone would look best in deep greens, blues, and purples.

Neutral undertones is a bit more complicated. People with neutral undertones are also lucky in the sense that they primarily look great in any color. However, neutral colors is where a cool color has warm undertones or if a warm color has cool undertones. For example, green is a cool color, but an olive green brings warm qualities. Red is a warm color, but a cranberry red brings cool qualities. Olive green would be considered more of a warm color and cranberry red would be considered a cool color. Mixing warm qualities with cool undertones and vise versa creates a neutral dynamic. Pinks, pale blues, cranberry reds, and olive greens are examples of neutral undertones.

Color blocking is another technique that neutral undertone people can get away with, which is where two opposite colors of the color wheel are worn to compliment one another. Red and green are complimentary, blue and orange are complimentary, and purple and yellow are complimentary. Below are some examples of each scenario:

Silver, Gold, or Rose Gold?

The most common technique is seeing if silver jewelry looks best on you or if gold jewelry looks best on you. This usually is the first and only indicator to tell if you are a cool undertone or a warm undertone. Silver jewelry will bring out the cool undertones in your skin and pigmentation while gold will bring out the warm hues in your skin. Whichever stands out the most and looks best on you is which to abide by. This solves whether or not reds, oranges, or yellows look best or if greens, blues, and purples look best.

Rose Gold:

Rose Gold on the other hand stands neutrally between the other two metallics. It brings out all skin tones, the undertones, and beautiful pigmentation in skin. If you are the one of many who can’t seem to find whether silver or gold looks best on you, try rose gold. Rose gold is so beautiful, lustrous, and rich and it meets in the middle between both color tones.

Check Your Veins

Another odd, yet helpful technique is to check your veins on your wrist. Blue veins indicate that you have a cool undertone, while green veins indicate that you have an olive or warm undertone. Once you figure that out, you’ll start to notice that blues, purples, and violets look best on you and bring out your complexion if you have bluer veins, and yellows, reds, and oranges will look best if you have greener veins. If you think you are stuck in the middle or can’t tell, you might be a neutral undertone.

White or Off-White?

Another tactic is to compare white clothes. White is a blank canvas and allows the pigment of your skin to stand out amongst it. Look and compare if a pure white or an off-white looks better on you. If a pure white looks better, you have a cooler undertone. If an off-white or washed out white looks better on you, you most likely have a warm undertone.

Natural Hair Color and Eye Color

If you have blue, grey, or green eyes with blonde, brown, or black hair, chances are you’re a cool undertone. If your eye color is brown, hazel, or amber eyes with strawberry blonde, auburn, or black hair with golden tones, chances are you have a warmer undertone.

Do You Tan or Burn? Or Both?

People who have a tendency to burn or not tan at all in the sun have a less likely chance of being a warm undertone. When people tan, chances are you have higher levels of melatonin in the skin. Melatonin gives the skin that yellow to olive pigment, which incidentally means you’re warm toned. If you burn or don’t tan easily, chances are you have cooler undertones because of the lack of melatonin in the skin. If you’re a neutral undertone, chances are you burn first before it turns to tan.

Bebe Rexha: The Queen of Body Positivity

Bebe Rexha slams fashion designers for allegedly calling her “too big” to style her a custom made dress for her recent Grammy nomination. Rexha, the American singer, songwriter, and record producer, brought light to the situation last Monday, January 21 on an Instagram post where she cursed out the fashion designers that her team reached out to in order to style her.

The story goes that Rexha, 29, had recently been nominated for a Grammy. She praised the fact that this happened to her in her Instagram post because this is what music artists work for; winning a Grammy, let alone being nominated for one, is an ultimate dream in the music industry. Usually, an artists team reaches out to designers in order to create a custom dress for the artist to walk on the red carpet in. Upon receiving her feedback from these designers, this was her response in the Instagram video:

“So, I finally get nominated at the Grammys and it’s like, the coolest thing ever. And a lot of times, artists will go and talk to designers and they’ll make them custom dresses to walk the red carpet,” Rexha explains. “So, I had my team hit out a lot of designers, and a lot of them do not want to dress me because I’m too big. Literally, I’m too big,” Rexha continues.

“If a size 6/8 is too big, then I don’t know what to tell you,” she lashes out. “Then I don’t want to wear your f—— dresses because that’s crazy ‘cause you’re saying that all the women in the world that are a size 8 and up are not beautiful and they cannot wear your dresses. So to all the people who said I’m thick and I can’t wear your dresses, f— you, I don’t want to wear your f—— dresses.”

Moral of the story, the Fashion Industry continues to slander body positivity throughout every season and platform. It is understandable that the runway has a specific silhouette to abide by in order to showcase a show’s season, however moments like this where they refuse to dress someone because they are “too big” is just plain juvenile. This is basically telling women and men that they can’t wear their clothing because their body is not beautiful enough. Saying that someone who is above a size 6 is too big to style is saying that body positivity doesn’t exist within that brand. These brands will forever be known for not empowering women and instead belittling them to these high beauty standards that this industry has been trying to get over for years.

We’re in a generation where body positivity has been an ongoing process in acceptance, but seeing fashion designers – the Gods and Kings of the entire industry – slander women like Rexha for being too big to style is taking a step back. Seeing fashion designers who are praised as role models in the industry pull this stunt completely demolishes any chances for them to become a voice for body positivity anytime soon.

FASHOM thrives on making people feel comfortable in their own skin. Having these big fashion brands discriminate against women of any body shape is something that should not be taken lightly. This is a huge developed issue that has seemingly gotten worse throughout the industry and we want to make women feel comfortable enough to love their body. Rexha is a voice for women of all body types and it needs to be remembered that regardless what size you are, you are beautiful no matter what; embrace it.
